Spain reached the semi-finals of Women’s Euro 2025 on Friday, defeating Switzerland 2-0 as the reigning world champions continued their pursuit of a first-ever European title.
Spain reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Euro after a hard-fought 2-0 win over hosts Switzerland in Bern, thanks to second-half goals from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina.
Despite missing two penalties one by Mariona Caldentey early on and another late from Alexia Putellas Spain’s quality ultimately shone through.
Switzerland, backed by a passionate crowd at Wankdorf Stadium, defended deep and made life difficult for Spain, who struggled to break through until the 66th minute.
Del Castillo scored just minutes after coming on, and Pina added a superb second soon after.
Irene Paredes and Patri Guijarro had earlier hit the woodwork as Spain pressed.
Although reduced to 10 players after Noelle Maritz was sent off late, Switzerland earned admiration for their performance in what was their best-ever Euros run.
Coach Pia Sundhage praised her team and the growing support for women’s football in Switzerland, calling the experience “very emotional.”
Spain now advance to face either France or Germany in the semi-finals.
