While turmeric is great for your skin, there is always the risk of staining your face and making it appear yellow. Here are simple tips on how you can avoid this situation.
Do a patch test and cleanse properly after application.
Turmeric has been a part of Indian skincare rituals and routines for centuries. From pre-wedding haldi ceremonies to DIY face masks passed down through generations, the golden spice is widely known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and brightening properties.
But as beneficial as turmeric is for your skin, using it the wrong way can leave behind a stubborn yellow tint that’s hard to get rid of, especially for those with lighter complexions or dry skin types.
Here’s how to enjoy turmeric’s many skincare benefits without walking around looking like you stepped out of a spice jar.
Pick the Right Turmeric
The first and most important step is selecting the right form of turmeric. Wild turmeric, also called Kasturi Manjal, is specially suited for skincare. Unlike regular cooking turmeric, it is less pigmented and does not stain the skin. It helps reduce acne, even out skin tone and brighten the complexion gently.
Always mix with a soothing base
Turmeric should never be applied directly to the skin. It is best mixed with calming ingredients like curd, milk, honey or aloe vera gel. These not only help dilute the colour but also nourish the skin and prevent any dryness or sensitivity.
Here is a simple recipe you can try at home
- Take one teaspoon of wild turmeric, two teaspoons of curd and a few drops of honey.
- Mix them into a smooth paste.
- Apply it to your face, leave it for ten to fifteen minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.
- Do not leave it on for too long.
- Turmeric is potent.
Leaving it on the face for more than twenty minutes increases the chance of yellow stains. To avoid that, use it only for a short time, and not more than twice a week.
Do a patch test first
Even natural remedies can sometimes cause allergic reactions. Always do a patch test on your inner arm before applying the paste to your face. If there is no itching or irritation, it is safe to proceed.
Cleanse properly after application
After rinsing off the mask, gently cleanse your face with a mild face wash or use milk on a cotton pad to remove any leftover yellow tint.
With these steps, turmeric can become a safe and glow-boosting addition to your skincare routine.
